*The formula the FT uses to grade advisors is based on six broad factors and calculates a numeric score for each adviser. Areas of consideration include assets under management, asset growth, years of experience, industry certification, Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (Finra) compliance record and online accessibility. FT presents the 400 as an elite group, not a competitive ranking. They acknowledge that ranking the industry’s top advisers from 1 to 400 would be a futile exercise since each takes different approaches to their practice and has different specializations. The FT methodology aims to be both quantifiable and objective.
**The criteria for this award is based on assets under management, revenues generated by advisors for their firms, and quality of practices. Barron’s examines regulatory records, internal company documents, and extensive questionnaires filled out by the advisors themselves. Investment performance isn’t explicitly a criterion, because the advisors pursue a wide range of investment goals for their clients. In assembling the rankings, they included more advisors for the larger states than for the smaller ones, in proportion to state populations.
***In the annual Registered Rep. Top 100 IBD financial advisor list, a proprietary methodology for ranking FINRA registered representatives were used. In this list, the advisors were ranked by assets under management using the Discovery-RR database system. Discovery maintains data on the registered rep universe then validates the ranking via direct survey.

The rankings are based on data provided by over 4,000 individual advisors and their firms and include qualitative and quantitative criteria. Factors included in the rankings: assets under management, revenue produced for the firm, regulatory record, quality of practice and philanthropic work. Investment performance is not an explicit component because not all advisors have audited results and because performance figures often are influenced more by clients’ risk tolerance than by an advisor’s investment picking abilities. The ranking may not be representative of any one client’s experience, is not an endorsement, and is not indicative of the advisor’s future performance.
